Theme: Making a Difference
ENGAGING PEACE: A CASE STUDY OF TOLEDO’S ERASE-THE-HATE YOUTH CONTESTS

WORKSHOP SUMMARY
How can interfaith communities make a tangible positive difference throughout a community? At the local level, the challenge can feel gargantuan. In Toledo, the interfaith community turned to the creativity of young people as an antidote to reducing hate crimes. Young adults were challenged to compete – using video, poetry, and posters – to help turn the tide on local violence, and the whole city got involved. This workshop is a case study of the Toledo project and will invite others to share their own stories and suggestions for transformational engagement of the larger community.

PRESENTERS
Woody & Judy Trautman

Woody Trautman, a retired engineer, and Judy Trautman, a retired teacher, are founders and co-chairs of the MultiFaith Council of NW Ohio and Board members of NAIN. Additionally, Judy edits the NAIN Newsletter. Through the MultiFaith Council they plan and facilitate activities of education, fellowship and service jointly for many of the dozen local faith communities.

OPENING STATEMENT

The MultiFaith Council takes part in Toledo’s “Erase the Hate”coalition by conducting contests among junior high and high school students. After a first year’s enthusiastic participation with a 60 second video contest we added poetry, then poster with similarly enthusiastic engagement. We have been pleased with the collaboration of our public TV channel WGTV, our local newspaper The Blade, and the Toledo Museum of Art. Some teachers have made participation a class activity and in all several hundred students have thought seriously about uninformed attitudes, stereotypes and resolution of personal conflicts.

We would appreciate knowing of similar ventures elsewhere, including challenges and successes. Also, what has been your experience with partnering with local organizations?

This sounds like a remarkable, beautiful project worth emmulating.

What I am wondering is - who had the idea? Who kept the energy moving? How did it keep growing rather than being 'one group's project'?

Would love to hear from you, Judy & Woody, about HOW you turned a good idea into a gung-ho project.

The Erase the Hate Coalition has been in Toledo for at least nine years. It is a loose coalition of multiple organizations that sponsor programs on the theme of tolerance, peace, and unity to combat racism, religious intolerance, gender intolerance, bullying and other hate issues. The MultiFaith Council sponsored several discussion series and annually sponsors a MultiFaith Thanksgiving Celebration and MultiFaith Banquet that now are linked to the Erase the Hate calendar.

Three years ago Judy, realizing that most of the steering committee were middle-aged or seniors, proposed a 60-second video contest for Junior and Senior High School students. The resulting videos transformed our final event. They were presented as 'commercials' betw

One group that is doing similar work (though not religious based) is an organization called Art in Action based out of Oakland California.

This group connects with the youth and young adults through conscious hip-hop and the related arts connected to this cultural movement.

I worked with many of these youth as a part of the Obama campaign and was very impressed with their ability to be agents of change through their music.
