Angela Butel is a senior at Macalester College in St. Paul, MN, majoring in Anthropology with concentrations in Human Rights and Humanitarianism and African Studies. She is working on completing an honors thesis building on research she did in Cameroon on refugees and humanitarian organizations. This thesis ties together interests relating to cultural diversity, global inequalities, and international humanitarian and development work.
These academic interests are closely linked to an overall passion for working for social justice, which is central to her understanding of the importance of interfaith work. Throughout her time at Macalester, Angela has been involved in a variety of interfaith initiatives. On campus, she has served as a member of the Macalester Multifaith Council and leader of Mac Catholics. She attended a leadership training for college-campus interfaith leaders through the Interfaith Youth Core, and was a Young Adult Scholar at the NAIN Connect in 2011. She has also worked as an intern and contributor at The Interfaith Observer, an online interfaith magazine. Currently, Angela is working as a Bonner Fellow at the Joint Religious Legislative Coalition of Minnesota, an interfaith public-interest lobby group that brings together people of diverse faith backgrounds to lobby for political change at the state level.
